A circular water refill system that replaces single-use plastic with a machine-compatible bottle-and-closure architecture — engineered for tamper evidence, freshness signaling, and repeated reuse.
Single-use plastic water bottles represent one of the most studied and least-solved problems in consumer packaging. WIM Water approached it from the infrastructure layer: instead of designing a better disposable, the brief called for redesigning the point-of-sale experience around an automated refill-and-reseal machine — making reuse as convenient as disposal.
The design effort centered on the bottle-closure system — the critical interface between machine and user. Every material choice, closure mechanism, and form decision had to satisfy four constraints simultaneously: machine compatibility for automated refilling, tamper evidence consumers would trust, freshness signals that communicated quality, and durability across repeated refill cycles.
Disciplines
Strategy
The strategy was to treat the resealing mechanism as the primary UX moment — the point where the machine communicates to the user that this bottle is fresh, clean, and trusted. Breakaway bands and peel-off seals deliver visual tamper evidence at first use. Color transitions, embossed text, and mechanical feedback — the snap, click, or pop of a properly seated closure — provide auditory and tactile confirmation at every subsequent refill.
Critically, the closure geometry was designed to reset each cycle. Materials were specified for machine-compatible tolerances and repeated mechanical engagement, while maintaining the surface quality and dimensional consistency of a premium packaged beverage. Reuse had to feel like a first fill.
Result
The WIM bottle and closure system delivers a repeatable, machine-compatible refill experience with layered freshness communication: visual tamper evidence, tactile sealing confirmation, and auditory feedback engineered directly into the closure geometry. Materials selected for durability across refill cycles and machine tolerances maintain the dimensional consistency and surface quality of a premium packaged beverage — making reuse feel like a first fill.
