Base camp lighting is defined by a persistent gap. Lanterns that produce meaningful output for a shared cooking and gathering space are heavy, fragile, or fuel-dependent. The solar options that exist in the outdoor market top out at decorative illumination rather than functional group light. The brief for the SiteLight XL was direct: build an area lantern that actually lights a space — with soft, diffused, room-style coverage — and does it in a form factor that packs flat and deploys in seconds.
The design challenge was rooted in system architecture. The XL needed to deliver generous ambient coverage while collapsing to a flat-pack format for transport, opening in a single motion for deployment, and integrating with the existing lighting ecosystem through daisy-chain compatibility. Every structural decision had to reconcile high-output diffusion with reliable collapse mechanics and cost targets for high-volume production.

Research at base camp environments consistently surfaced the same gap: existing portable lanterns produced point-source light that cast hard shadows across a shared space. Users were layering multiple smaller lights to achieve the soft, even coverage they needed for cooking, reading, and group activity — or hauling fuel lanterns that produced the right output at the cost of weight, maintenance, and fuel dependency.
The opportunity was a single lantern that could illuminate a full gathering circle with the quality of indoor ambient light — diffused, even, all-direction — rather than a spotlight or point source. The collapsible globe format solved both the output quality problem and the packability problem simultaneously, but only if the collapse mechanism was reliable and fast enough to earn use on actual trips.
Strategy
The central mechanism was a pop-open globe structure that collapses flat for transport and snaps to full deployment in a single motion. The collapsible frame geometry was engineered to maintain consistent tension in the diffusion material across its full expanded diameter — uniform diffusion depends on uniform geometry, and that required precision in both the frame dimensions and the material attachment system.
A hang-anywhere suspension loop works with tent ridgelines, camp infrastructure, and improvised anchors. Daisy-chain connector compatibility allows multiple XL units to share power across larger group setups. The packaging was designed to demonstrate the collapse-to-expanded transformation at retail — communicating the product's core innovation without requiring a demonstration.
